本刊1992年經國家科委批準創辦，由洛陽耐火材料研究院主辦，是目前中國耐火材料行業唯一的一本英文雜志，現為季刊。創刊以來己出11卷(包括今年)，受到海內外學者、企業家、商人的歡迎。目前與國外二十家雜志建立了交換關系，例如，美國的“陶瓷協會會刊與英國的“耐火材料與陶瓷”，德國的“陶瓷論壇”，比利時的“硅酸鹽”，法國的“陶瓷工業”，日本的“耐火物“等。并且與幾家著名的二次文獻檢索刊物也建立了密切聯系。目前國內外訂戶及贈閱數、交換數達1000多本/年，國外訂戶主要分布在美國、英國、印度、日本、德國、法國、南非、阿根廷以及東南亞和阿拉伯等十幾個國家。本雜志主要反映當前中國耐火材料發展現狀。論文內容涉及到原料、工藝、生產及應用方面的新進展，以及設備更新。除研究報告和論文、綜述與展望外，還報道了國家公布的一些統計數據，市場信息反迸出口情況等。同時我刊還可刊登廣告和廠礦簡介。
當時創辦該刊的目的主要是讓世界了解中國耐火材料，試圖在中國耐火材料與世界耐火材料同行之間架起一座信息橋梁。尤其中國已加入世界貿易組織(WTO)，我們需要更多地參與國際市場競爭，那么通過《中國耐火材料》的介紹，無疑是一條重要的渠道。目前為止，由于《中國耐火材料》的介紹或通過《中國耐火材料》的報道，取得與國外商人聯系并最終出口耐火材料產品或原料的企業十幾家。眾所周知，中國耐火材料通過20多年改革開放，無論在原材料的質量上還是在制成品的質量上都有了長足的進展，有的已接近或超過國外先進水平。由于過去政策封閉，耐火材料行業因與外界聯系較少，出口渠道少，出口最也就少。隨著我國改革開放政策的深入，與國際同行交流日趨增加，中國耐火材料原料及產品出口也逐年增加，但與中國耐火材料產量相比，遠遠不夠.尤其在國內市場競爭日趨激烈的條件下，尋求出口不乏是重要出路之一。因此需要更多媒體的介入，以便廣交國際朋友，擴大出口渠道。
中國耐火材料欄目設置主要欄目：綜述、研究報告、學術討論、應用報告。
